It's the middle of the night, and Elva Hsiao YaXuan is still churning out the heavy dance steps at the filming site in LinKou. The dance routine is for her new single, "More More More," which is to be marketed across both bodies of water: in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The MV is rumored to have cost several million NTD and is for Elva’s upcoming new album, 三面夏娃/3-Faced Elva, her first project after re-signing with EMI Virgin. The album will be released on the 15th of June, beating Jolin Tsai's 愛的練習語/Practicing the Language of Love (Love Exercise) to shelves. This has caused outsiders to speculate that there are problems between the two divas.
Elva rushed to explain that the move is strictly business-related; they now belong to the same parent company. "I'm at Virgin, she's at Capitol-- but they both belong to EMI. We're friends in our private lives. Although we aren't super close, it's still very weird... we've been talked about since our very first albums!"
Having said this, Elva threw herself completely into her own work. Wearing a snug, form-fitting leotard with a racerlike feel to it, the power she put into her dance moves was amazing! She popped one of the buttons at the bottom of her leotard; her jeans, meant to be broken and ragged, became even more so. Her arms still bore marks from her scraping (gua sha*) session to treat her extreme fatigue. In preparation for this MV, Elva traveled to Hong Kong to study martial arts, then rushed to Beijing to film scenes with 吳京 Wu Jing. She was suspended in the air by wires for so long that it left marks on her arms, her limbs started to bruise, and her skin began to blister.
* Translator's Note: 刮痧 Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicinal practice used to treat extreme fatigue, muscle injuries, aches, pains, etc. Most commonly, a Chinese ceramic spoon is used; it leaves red marks, but does not hurt. I have never had it done, but I saw my aunt after she did...
Elva spent two years penning and perfecting the lyrics for this song; she also put a huge amount of mental and physical effort into the MV; it was the longest she'd spent on any MV. Seven days were spent on practicing dance moves, seven on practicing martial arts, and, finally, three days were taken for the formal shoot. The budget for the MV is even more astonishing: the fees for the director, the dance teacher, travel, hairdresser, and 吳京 Wu Jing add up to nearly $5,000,000 NTD!
