When he first joined Jacky Wu's Alfa Music company, Jay Chou's position was music production assistant. This is a job where you have to do almost anything, one of those things was helping colleagues buy lunch, this was his "reserved activity" each day. He knew he was a newcomer, if he wants to make it in the music company he has to help his colleagues get lunch, so he's always very diligent.
One time, the company was helping a big Hong Kong star produce an album. Due to the fact there were a lot of people in the recording studio and they were quite spread out, Jay Chou momentarily couldn't count how many people needed take out lunches. In order not to miss anyone out, on that day he bought lunch from 12 to 3 in the afternoon, he ran here to there 4 to 5 times. At the end, he didn't even have anything to drink, and surprisingly no one at the recording studio helped him.
Jacky Wu saw all of this and thought: This youngster is a steady worker, he's not afraid of hard work, but he's always so busy, where will he get the time to write songs......thus, he provided Jay Chou with an office and named it Alfa Music office and let him concentrate on creating music.
From this point onwards, this small place became the stage for Jay Chou to release his dreams. Even though his wage was only TW$5000, but he had an unprecedented interest in music. He wasn't scared of not being able to feel the happiness of music outside the recording studio. Therefore, his work went very smoothly.
Due to the fact Jay Chou had already established a firm foundation in music, he created a great amount of songs very quickly. But what Jacky Wu could never understand was that the lyrics he wrote were always weird, practically no one liked them within the music circle, so, he always disappointingly put Jay Chou's script to one side.
One time, Jay Chou brought one of his proud works to Jacky Wu for him to look over. This time, Jacky Wu saw his pleased face, he wanted to incite him. After receiving the script, he didn't even look at it and scrunched that song into a mess and threw it into the trash bin.
Seeing this scene, Jay Chou didn't say a thing, he turned around and left his boss' office. He couldn't hold his tears back.....
But this youngster, who doesn't know how to lose, knew that if he gave up he'll just be firing himself. Thus, he continued to write, the second day, the third day.....he wrote at the pace of one song per day. 7 days in a row, when Jacky Wu arrived at work at 8 every day, he'll always see Jay Chou's work on time. At last, he was deeply moved by this kid's gift and diligence and promised to find artists to perform his songs.
In February 1998, Jay Chou wrote the song "Tears Know". This time, Jacky Wu decided to push this song to the heavenly king class singer Andy Lau. Who could have thought, when the lyrics arrived at Andy Lau's hands, he only just took a glance at it, and shook his head saying: "How can tears know, what do tears want to know?" Just like this, Andy Lau declined to perform this song as he didn't appreciate the lyrics.
Afterwards, Jay Chou wrote the song "Nun-Chuks" for the extremely popular Amei Chang at the time. He thought, Amei Chang is a bit more forward, it should be easier for her to accept his work. But, who could have thought, his "Nun-Chuks" that he put all his effort into was declined without hesitation by Amei Chang.
After time and time again of failure, Jay Chou, who always desired success in song writing, was lost, he even questioned how much further he could walk the path of music......
